The Canterbury Secondary School Athletics preliminaries took centre stage at Nga Puna Wai on March 26. We had 40 students showcase their talent and skills throughout the day. Despite the windy afternoon and evening, which posed a challenge to both athletes and organisers alike, finals day was held for the first time as a twilight meet on March 28. The heavy rain that was forecast earlier in the day held off until the latter part of the programme and didn’t stop our athletes competing at their best undeterred by the elements.

Out of the 40 students who initially competed, an impressive 23 students (not including relay runners) qualified for finals day. Additionally, four relay teams showcased their teamwork and determination, not letting the rain or wind get in their way.

South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships

Sunny conditions on a fresh track at Aorangi Stadium in Timaru proved the perfect backdrop for the South Island Secondary Schools’ Championships that were held last weekend. Among the talented athletes from across the South Island, St Bede’s College had seven athletes representing the school.

It was a successful weekend for our St Bede’s representatives with the highlight being our U16 relay teams taking out both the 4x100m and the 4x400m relays. The boys not only won the 4x100m relay, but they also posted their season best time, and our 4x400m team won setting a new South Island Secondary Schools’ record.
