Gateway students show skills in the workplace

By April 10, 2024April 30th, 2024No Comments

It’s been a busy start to the year in Gateway. In Term One, we’ve had more than 25 students gaining work experience in industries such as automotive, building, plumbing, electrical, painting, groundskeeping (sports turf), and farming. The feedback from employers has been extremely positive and we’re proud of the hard work the boys have been putting in.

Through the Gateway programme, Year 12 and 13 students have the opportunity to go out on work experience one to two days per week, while undertaking relevant industry training which will help to kickstart their career. This term, students have gone through training in Advanced First Aid, Health and Safety, Site Safe, and the MITO Automotive StartUp programme. Our Dual Enrolment students have also been thoroughly enjoying their Level 3 trade programmes through ARA (building and construction) and Avon City Ford (automotive).

Our congratulations go to Campbell Behrnes, whose effort and skills in the workplace have led to an apprenticeship offer with Fulton Hogan. Campbell will be doing a double apprenticeship in Heavy Automotive Engineering (Road Transport) and Plant and Equipment Engineering. We wish you all the best Campbell and know you have an exciting and successful career ahead of you.

Finally, special thanks to all of our amazing employers who have given our young men the opportunity to learn from you. If you or your workplace would be interested in taking on a Gateway student, please email Kirstyn at klankshear@stbedes.school.nz as we’d love to have you on board and answer any questions you have.

Stay tuned for more updates from Gateway in Term 2.
