Comic scene a hit at Shakespeare festival

St Bede’s entered two scenes in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Competition, which took place at Christchurch Boys’ High School on Sunday, 7 April. 

 Alex Newton (Year 12) directed a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which The Rude Mechanicals are introduced and assigned roles for their play within a play. The cast was Alex Brown, Oscar Lucioni, Will Balani, Luke Coyle, Fletcher Smith and William Inwood. The comic scene was a hit with the audience and the group were awarded Best Comedy Ensemble.

Ms Lou Days directed the second entry, the mousetrap scene from Hamlet, in which the crime committed by Hamlet’s uncle and mother is exposed in a reenacted drama. Students from Marian College joined 10 students from St Bede’s, with lead roles played by Oscar Bekhuis (Hamlet), Heinrich Muller (Claudius), Joe Coyle (Player King), Harry Murphy (Polonius), Daniel van der Werf (Rosencrantz), and Conor Francis (Horatio). The player company was Luke Beaumont, Josh Snelgar, Callum Knill, and Cory Adams.
