Kapa Haka

The St Bede’s College Kapa Haka Group practices every Friday after school in the Performing Arts Centre. We perform at Variety Concerts, Prizegivings and other important events on the school calendar. The group is made up of boys from all year levels and various cultural backgrounds.

Members of our Kapa Haka group performed at the Whakataetae Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua ki Waitaha (Waitaha Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Competition) as part of a combined Catholic High School’s Kapa Haka group with Marian College, Catholic Cathedral College, Saint Thomas of Canterbury and Villa Maria College. The group was led confidently by our own Jake Thomas and they had practiced regularly throughout the year and then much more intensively leading up to the competition. Tamahou Thoms spoke fluently and with a real sense of pride, and the performance also involved an appearance by Maui Brennan on saxophone to accompany the soloist from Marian. Dave Brennan (tutor) has spent many hours with these students to prepare them for this event and his efforts are much appreciated by the boys, their parents and the staff of Saint Bede’s College. The boys who performed on the day were: Jake Thomas and Xavier Fulguirinas (Year 13), Tamahou Thoms (Year 10) and Sam Robb (Year 9).
