Facilities

Situated on over 22 hectares of fields and trees, the College enjoys grounds and facilities that are the envy of many.  Major new projects and renovations have taken place over the past 8 years with the result that the buildings are comfortable, modern, and most importantly, function well for those learning and working in them.

The College has an extensive range of facilities available for hire, including classrooms and sports grounds.

Chapel of St Bede

Our new Chapel of St Bede was opened in September 2019 and plays a vital part in how we educate and develop students; it is part of what forms the special character of the College and where values, faith and strength are grown.

The old historic Chapel was demolished in 2012 due to earthquake damage and many of it’s features were preserved and incorporated into the new Chapel.  The strong desire to include these features has contributed to the overall Chapel design having a traditional flavour and they have been an important part of the design process for our architect Alec Bruce, of Wilkie and Bruce Architects.

We acknowledge our Foundation, Families and Old Boy’s Communities for their generous contribution to the this project.

Performing Arts Centre

The recently refreshed and refurbished PAC (Performing Arts Centre) Auditorium is used by the college for the staging of plays, productions and musical concerts, as well as student and parent meetings and seminars.

A classic theatre layout tiered seating for an audience of up to 206, plus dedicated space for two wheelchairs.  The theatre is complimented by modern stage lighting and audio-visual setup and capabilities.

The recently extended foyer is used for college and social functions for up to 150 attendees.

Grimes

This light, modern space is perfectly suited to a wide variety of functions and events.

Adaptability and flexibility were key design considerations of this new College facility, completed in 2019.

Two separate foyer spaces and three breakout rooms, as well as wifi access and adaptable audio-visual facilities, means Grimes can easily accommodate small conferences with multiple sessions, for up to 75 attendees.

The downstairs foyer can also be hired separately for seminars, workshops, receptions, social functions and prizegivings. Bifold doors occupy the west wall, providing indoor/outdoor flow to the landscaped quadrangle.

Gymnasium and Pool

The gymnasium houses two full sized courts, a weights room and teaching space for the P.E. Faculty.

Boarders have supervised access to the gymnasium and swimming pool.

General Recreation

In addition to team training facilities boarders have the opportunity to use tennis courts, cricket practice facilities, sports fields and weight training areas.

Dormitories

Our three dormitories are designated to specific year level groupings. Dormitory masters live in each dorm, and accommodation is either open plan or single / double rooms.

  • Durham This is located in the old part of the school and houses Junior (Year 9 and 10) students
  • Jarrow This building caters for Years 11 and 12 and comprises single and double rooms, common room and ablution block. It is a modern single-storied building set on the southern boundary.
  • Wearmouth This building for Year 13 students comprises double bedrooms with desks, study area, large common room and ablution block and studio for the dormitory master.

Dining Hall

The St Bede’s Dining Room has a capacity of 180. It serves as the everyday dining room for the boarding school, as well as hosting formal and informal occasions. Catering is available by arrangement.
