POGIL
POGIL stands for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning. During a POGIL session we will work in teams to learn how to communicate effectively, listen well, and think critically to develop each other’s understanding of Chemistry.
During each session we will do the following:
1. Choose roles for each person on our team
2. Work through an initial information set and series of questions as a team
3. Prepare a presentation of answers to the class (typically done on marker boards)
4. Compare and discuss answers as a class to arrive at a consensus
5. Evaluate our team’s group dynamics and understanding of concepts
Roles
At the beginning of a POGIL session, each team member assumes responsibility for one of the following roles:
Leader
• Actively participates in the activity
• Keeps the team on task
• Distributes work and assigns responsibilities to team members
• Resolves disputes between team members
• Ensures that all members participate and understand the activity
Recorder
• Actively participates in the activity
• Keeps an accurate record of all answers during the activity
• Keeps track of corrections to the team’s answers during class discussions
Presenter
• Actively participates in the activity
• Presents the team’s answers (typically on a marker board) in preparation for class discussions
Evaluator
• Actively participates in the activity
• Evaluates the team’s group dynamics and their understanding of concepts
• Prepares the final written evaluation of the team
Successful POGIL Teams
Your teacher will be observing you during POGIL sessions and evaluating the effectiveness of your
team’s participation in the activity. A successful POGIL team does the following:
• All members listen to each other, cordially discuss answers, and work through differences to
come to as best a consensus as possible
• Members rely on each other for help and ask the teacher questions only as a last resort
• During class discussions, members compare and contrast their team’s answers with those of
other teams and contribute ideas respectfully
• Members help the evaluator seriously evaluate their team’s dynamics and look for ways to
improve
