CanTeen 2011
Why CanTeen?; CanTeen legends.
CanTeen is an organization very close to the hearts of all Bedeans. Over the past ten years we have raised thousands of dollars for them through our ‘Run for A Life’ campaign where we run from all corners of the South Island to Christchurch. Why do we do this? Because we can, because we care, and because we are lucky enough to be cancer free.
The CanTeen ‘Run For Life’ was scheduled to take place at the end of Term 1: April 13 – April 18 2011. This year, the earthquakes meant we were unable to do our ‘Run For A Life’ big run.
As we still wanted to do something to raise funds for Canteen, on Sunday October 2nd, 230+ students from St Bede’s College and Marian College joined together for a 12 hour Sports Fest and Run. Students from both Colleges made up 10 man teams to complete the 12 hour run or sports tournament. Each team was challenged to raise a minimum of $500.
The day began at 5.45am when we gathered together to pray around the stone cross on the front field. This set the tone and the sense of comraderie continued for the next 12 hours. Many, many laughs were had and the energy levels were high throughout the day although as we neared the 12 hour mark tiredness set in. Highlights of the day were the Old Boys Mass, the group aerobics session and the ‘zumba off’ where many of our Bedeans discovered dance skills they never knew they had!
Congratulations to Mitch Green who completed 112 laps of the front field. Indicative of the day was the way in which the students ran with him to get him through the last lap and gathered to cheer him in.
The money is rolling in . . . a reminder to all involved that you committed to raising a minimum of $50. Thanks to the following who donated goods on the day, keeping our costs down, allowing us to donate as much as possible to CanTeen – Genesis Energy, Hellers, O’Neills Rentals, Juice Express and The Mad Butcher.
