On Sunday, 02 October, a large crowd of old boys and their partners, friends of the College, staff and students from both St Bede’s and Marian Colleges gathered for the annual old boys mass. Fr Rod Milne was the chief celebrant and he was assisted by Fathers Kevin Mears, Kevin Manning and Bern Ryan, who had travelled from Australia.

Morning tea followed the Mass at this was also the occasion for the launch of The Faith of Our Fathers, the
centennial history and Pat Leeming’s centennial art work. Robin Mann, the chairman of the centennial committee addressed the gathering and thanked the author, David McCarthy for his efforts. He then presented a copy to the Rector, Justin Boyle.

Unfortunately Pat Leeming was unable to attend the unveiling of his centennial painting. Those who attended were delighted to see that he had depicted the College buildings in a contemporary setting with blazered boys prominent.

Over 170 gathered for the annual old boys dinner. The evening was notable for the unveiling of three new Bedean icons – Robin Corcoran, Fr. Bern Ryan and Gary Lennon. Members of the Corcoran and Lennon families were in attendance and this added to the occasion.

Keelan Kilpatrick won the OBA Sportsman of the Year Cup

Congratulations to the 230+ students who were involved in the Sports Fest and Run for CanTeen last Sunday 2 October. It was one of those days that is hard to describe because it was just so special. The day began at 5.45am when we gathered together to pray around the stone cross on the front field.
This set the tone for the day and the sense of comraderie continued for the next 12 hours. Many, many laughs were had and the energy levels were high throughout the day although as we neared the 12 hour mark tiredness set in. Highlights of the day were the Old Boys Mass, the group aerobics session and the ‘zumba off’ where many of our Bedeans discovered dance skills they never knew they had!

Congratulations to Mitch Green who completed 112 laps of the front field. Indicative of the day was the way in which the students ran with him to get him through the last lap and gathered to cheer him in.
The money is rolling in . . . a reminder to all involved that you committed to raising a minimum of $50. Thanks to the following who donated goods on the day, keeping our costs down, allowing us to donate as much as possible to CanTeen – Genesis Energy, Hellers, O’Neills Rentals, Juice Express and The Mad
Butcher.

What are they?
•	The Earthquake Impaired Derived Grade process has been developed by NZQA to recognise the extraordinary circumstances we have faced this year resulting in the loss of teaching and learning time.
•	All students enrolled at St Bede’s College at the last day of Term 3 are eligible for derived grades.
Do I have to apply?
•	No
• BUT to be eligible for a derived grade in each standard you must:
o	be present at the examination session for that standard in November/December and
o	answer the paper by presenting specific evidence for that standard
Unless both of these conditions are met the student will not be eligible to be considered for a derived grade for the standard(s). For example, if a candidate leaves the bulk of a paper unanswered, or writes nonsense or doodles, this would not constitute a genuine attempt.
Which grade will the school send?
•	The school will send your highest valid school grade for each standard to NZQA
•	This is most likely your school exam result
•	This will be the grade on your end of year school report
•	Visual Arts, Graphics (Design & Visual Communications) and Technology portfolios have a process which will take into account both the work you have completed and your teacher’s recommended grade.
What grade will be on my Results Notice?
•	The grade you are awarded in each standard will be the higher of your school grade and your NZQA exam grade.
•	It will not be an average of these grades
•	Your result will not show that your grade is a derived grade
•	It will not distinguish between school grades and NZQA grades

You are really being given more than one chance at getting your best grade!

What if I am unable to sit the NZQA exams?
If you are absent from an exam for illness, injury or suffer a family bereavement you will need to apply for a Derived Grade through the usual process as you have always done in the past.
•	See Mrs Kilpatrick if this happens to you

The 6 grants given put Hayden in the company of Sam Johnson (Student Volunteer Army) and swimmer Sophie Pascoe. This certainly marks Hayden out as a young person with talent, drive and great potential for the future.

Last night’s Variety Concert brought together the talents of a large number of students in a varied and enjoyable line up. Ably compered by Viane Makalio and Delbert Castillo, the show featured items from solo singers, some of whom were completing Level 3 NCEA assessments, and various combinations including the Senior Choir and the “Brown Brothers”, a group of Polynesian students singing a medley they had put together. Godfrey Redoblado sang one of his own compositions with the assistance of several other students and there were a number of newcomers to the stage – Nathanial Flynn (Year 12) and Angus Simmons (Year11) with guitarist Harry Flett (Year 10). The jazz trio opened the evening with a polished bracket of items, demonstrating its silver-medal ability and dancer Hayden Withers closed the show with an impressive performance. The evening raised over $500 for CanTeen and the enthusiasm and support of the audience made it a success for all involved.
