Chapel Appeal

Dear Old Boys and Friends of the College
We are writing this letter as the final stages of preparation for our centennial are underway.

In recent months the College has faced some unpalatable truths about its buildings. In part these grim realities have been a direct result of the earthquakes but in a number of cases buildings have been found to be earthquake prone. This means there will be a significant cost to bring these buildings up to code and even if this is possible the age and their suitability for modern teaching practices makes the repair questionable. A preliminary estimate of the cost of replacing damaged buildings and/or repairing earthquake prone buildings is around $20m.

Neither the College nor the Foundation have the resources to meet this cost.

As a consequence of this situation the Boards of Trustees and Proprietors, the Foundation and the Old Boys Association have unanimously agreed to a fundraising campaign to replace the College Chapel. Preliminary estimates put the cost of building a similar chapel at $4.75m and while insurance will meet part of this there will be a shortfall. This is the immediate goal for the fundraising group.

We would ask you to support this appeal by either a one-off donation or by committing to regular giving. If you would like to contribute please contact St Bede’s Development Office, Tony Murdoch,, (03)375 0647 x 828.
