Centennial Organising Committee

The Centennial Committee has met regularly over the past two years under the chairmanship of Robin Mann.

At the first formal meeting of the committee Justin Boyle detailed the founding principles for the celebrations. In summary these are to:

•  Welcome back to the College all former Bedeans and the families of Bedeans.
•  Stage a range of centenary events over the full year.
•  Stage events that are of a high quality and that are enjoyed by all.
•  Celebrate the founding values – ‘Catholic, Marist and Bedean’.
•  Stage the major events on and around the Feast of St Bede.
•  Celebrate outstanding achievements.
•  Celebrate all who have attended the College.
•  Celebrate the contributions Bedeans have made to society.
•  Ensure present students participate fully in the celebrations.
•  Incorporate the celebrations into the new Strategic Plan.
•  Avoid linking fundraising with the celebrations.

Underlying these key concepts is the idea so eloquently expressed by the late Geoffrey Clarke that “every effort needs to be made to open the gates to all Old Boys because there are some who, for whatever reason, are afraid to come back up that driveway. Fr. Mark Walls, at the Black Tie Dinner, reiterated these sentiments when he told the story of the first Rector Father Graham who mysteriously disappeared amidst some scandal. Mark urged the audience to open their hearts if, by some miracle, he was to reappear.

“I’d love to think that Fr. Graham could be, finally forgiven for whatever scandal he caused. He founded St Bede’s twice, firstly at Ferry Road and then on the present site … Recognising his greatness whatever happened, might be symbolic for those of our old colleagues who feel disaffected … That would make 100 years worth celebrating.”
