Yr 10 History/Geography
Papanui at War; how a local community is shaped by global events
This course investigates the participation of the Papanui community in the two world wars. It will highlight significant battles that local soldiers were involved in (including Gallipoli, Passendale, El Alamein, and Monte Cassino), and the ways that the wars affected the local community. Investigates the physical setting of the battlefields, and how geography influenced the outcome of the battle and affected the soldiers’ lives. We will explore Christchurch’s war defences with a field trip to the Godley Head gun emplacements. Investigation of primary historical sources – diaries, letters home, newspapers, as well as local war memorials and honour boards – will show us how the war experience affected people’s lives. Stories of New Zealand at war have made a vital contribution to our understanding of our nation’s place in the world, and this course will encourage students to reflect on how these events shaped our local community.
