Yr 13 Art History

Art History is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of works of art within their cultural and historical context. We will examine the art, architecture and artifacts artists produced, study the artists who made then and investigate the society they created them for. Art History is a useful subject to gain a deeper understanding of history, society and culture and has specific application for those who intend careers in architecture, art design, journalism or museum studies. Further Art History studies can be followed at most New Zealand Universities and Polytechnics. Even if this subject is not studied beyond school level it will provide the foundation for an interest for life.

The course comprises of aspects of Renaissance and Modern art – painting, sculpture and architecture.  Artists studied include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and contemporary New Zealand artists. In 2007 the course will involve students in field work outside the classroom, including visits to art galleries and artists’ studios.

The topics studied are:

  • Fifteenth Century Italian Painting
  • High Renaissance and Mannerism
  • Modern New Zealand Art

Achievement Objectives:

The course will enable students to:

  • use and understand the terminology appropriate to the subject;
