Yr 9 & 10 Mathematics
The aim is to provide a balanced mathematics scheme, based on the study of Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement and Statistics, that reflects the philosophy of our college as expressed in the Charter, and adheres to the aims and objectives of the revised National Curriculum in Mathematics, which will be fully implemented in 2010.
Within this learning area students will learn in a range of meaningful contexts, students will be engaged in thinking mathematically and statistically. They will solve problems and model situations, making full use of inquiry and various ‘thinking’ techniques.
The three strands and the end of year examination will be assessed using the National Curriculum level. During the year students will have their problem solving strategies assessed in the following categories:
- Creativity
- Communication
- Logic
- Language
Students will be given the opportunity to use the statistical enquiry cycle to complete a social responsibility project at the end of the year.
Self reflection is an important part of the Mathematics programme and students are encouraged to use E-Asttle reports and their portfolios to identify areas which require development and then target these areas in booster week.
Numeracy
Since Numeracy is deeply embedded in the revised curriculum, our students will be given every opportunity to develop in this respect.
The Supportive Education programme in mathematics aims to help students who have need of personal assistance in the subject, and is administered by Mr Green. Students (or parents) should contact Mr Green if they are in need of assistance in Mathematics. Also, students are referred to Mr Green by their Mathematics teachers. Contact Mr Green.
Competitions
Students have the opportunity to participate in the following competitions:
- Australian Maths Competition (open to all)
- National Bank Junior Maths Competition (restricted to more able students)
- Cantamath at the Town Hall (four teams selected on merit)
Acceleration
The opportunity will be given to exceptional students to be “accelerated” and move ahead by one Year (or even two years) to the next achievement level.
In 2010 all Year 10 students will be assessed in the Level 1 Achievement Standard 90150 (Geometric techniques ).
Entry requirements into NCEA Level 1 Achievement Standards in Year 11 will be based on the national curriculum level attained.
