Our Year 9 English programme is based round the two strands of the English Curriculum (2007). These are: Making meaning of ideas or information (Listening, Reading and Viewing) and Creating meaning for themselves or others (Speaking, Writing and Presenting). Students in Year 9 study a range of different topics that seek to build upon established skills to prepare students for the demands of NCEA. Throughout the year students are regularly assessed in a range of areas and these assessments make up a portfolio of work that they take into Year 10.
Assessment at Year 9 is based on the curriculum levels and achievement within these levels. Students’ reading levels are tested using ASTTLE. An end of year examination provides the opportunity to improve on some of the skills assessed earlier in the year.
