Level Two – Level Seven on the Curriculum

There are two strands in the English Curriculum (2007).  They are: Listing, Reading and Viewing and Speaking, Writing and Presenting.  Under these strands students should be able to fulfil the following:

Listening, Reading and Viewing

  • select and read texts for enjoyment and personal fulfillment;
  • recognize connections between oral, written, and visual language;
  • select and uses sources of information (meaning, structure, visual and grapho-phonic information) and prior knowledge with growing confidence to make sense of increasingly varied and complex texts;
  • use an increasing knowledge of letter clusters, affixes, roots, and compound words to confirm predictions;
  • select and uses processing strategies and an increasing range of comprehension strategies with some understanding and confidence;
  • think critically about texts with some confidence;
  • monitor, self-evaluate, and describe progress with some confidence.

Viewing and Speaking, Writing and Presenting

  • show some understanding of the connections between oral, written, and visual language when creating texts;
  • create texts by using meaning, structure, visual and grapho-phonic sources of information, and processing strategies with growing confidence;
  • seek feedback and makes changes to texts to improve clarity and meaning;
  • is reflective about the production of texts: monitors, self-evaluates, and describes progress with some confidence.

Students will complete NCEA Level Two Achievement Standards and one Unit Standard. The course will comprise a combination of internal and external assessments.

Please note that to progress to Level 3 Higher English, you must achieve at least 16 credits which will include Internal Standard 90376 (Produce Formal Writing.) To progress into Level 3 General English, you must achieve at least 10 credits.

Please note that entrance to university requires students to fulfil a literacy requirement. Four credits at level two or higher are required in Reading and 4 credits in Writing at level two or higher from a list of Achievement and Unit Standards.  Our programme fulfils these requirements.  However it is planned to offer some extra courses at Year 13 for those students who are in danger of not meeting this requirement.
