Level One – Level Six on the Curriculum

There are two strands in the English Curriculum (2007).  They are:  Listening, Reading and Viewing and Speaking, Writing and Presenting.  Under these strands, students should be able to fulfil the following:

Listening, Reading and Viewing

  • select and read texts for enjoyment and personal fulfilment;
  • have an awareness of the connections between oral, written, and visual language;
  • use sources of information (meaning, structure, visual and grapho-phonic information) and prior knowledge to make sense of a range of texts;
  • associate sounds with letter clusters as well as with individual letters;
  • use processing and some comprehension strategies with some confidence;
  • develop the ability to think critically about texts;
  • begin to monitor, self-evaluate, and describe progress.

Viewing and Speaking, Writing and Presenting

  • have an awareness of the connections between oral, written, and visual language when creating text;
  • create texts by using meaning, structure, visual and grapho-phonic sources of information, prior knowledge, and some processing strategies with some confidence;
  • seek feedback and make changes to texts;
  • become reflective about the production of own texts;
  • begin to monitor, self-evaluate, and describe progress.

Students will complete NCEA Level One Achievement Standards and one Unit Standard. The course will comprise a combination of  internal and external assessments. During the course of the year students will sit four internal standards worth 12 credits and four external standards worth 10 credits.

A minimum of 8 literacy credits are needed at Level One English.

In order to progress to Level 2 English students need to attain at least 16 credits, including Formal Writing and another external. For University Entrance, 4 reading and 4 writing credits at Level 2 are required.
