Rowing
When you think about rowing in New Zealand, do you picture the Olympic Games, gold medal success and being proud “Kiwis”?
St Bede’s College has been involved in rowing for over fifty years and currently has 40 boys, from various walks of life, actively participating in the sport. Rowing is a very expensive sport, but the discipline and dedication that the boys gain through their involvement will be with them for the rest of their lives.
St Bede’s Rowing Committee is responsible for all organisational aspects of the sport. This includes coaching, travel, accommodation, fund raising, food, uniforms and plant maintenance and replacement. The Committee ensures that all boys have every opportunity to excel at rowing to their highest ability.
St Bede’s Rowing History
For many years St Bede’s has achieved excellent results and produced outstanding rowers who have gone on to represent both Canterbury and New Zealand. With its proud rowing history, a St Bede’s Old Boy has been in every NZ Olympic Rowing team since 1964 (see Appendix 1). This success has continued recently, and in 2007 Ben Wooding was selected for the world championships and in 2008 William Meates was selected for a New Zealand U18 eight.
The current head coach is Dave Lindstrom, who represented New Zealand in the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.
Greg Brand (bow seat) was selected in the 2011 NZ Under 18 4 to compete at the this year’s worlds competed at Eton in England in August. Greg’s team finished with the Silver Medal
