Shakespeare festival
Ms Ruth Sullivan, Teacher in Charge of Drama
At the end of last term a group of year 12 and 13 students participated in the Sheliah Winn Festival of Shakespeare. This took place over four nights and the St Bede’s College performance of Titus Andronicus; a lesser known but nevertheless gruesome Shakespearean play. They performed an extract from nearer the end of the play which involved the rather passionate killing of the twins Chiron and Demetrius. Their performance was compelling and won the group a place in the National Finals in Wellington alongside St Andrew’s College. These were the only two schools selected from Canterbury.
Over Queen’s Birthday Weekend, the group were able to participate in workshops from circus performance to unravelling Shakespearean text as well as Aaron Richardson and Jacob Fagan being able to take advantage of being in Wellington and spending time at Toi Whakaari or National Drama School.

The group’s performance was an extremely captivating one and certainly had the audience spell bound as it was wonderful to hear the audience gasp at the moment of the twins death. The St Bede’s group took away two awards from the festival and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves over the weekend.
