Mr Matt Malone
Last Saturday the Canterbury Secondary Schools Touch championships were held at Sheldon Park. This is an annual event and allows the top four teams in Canterbury to progress to the South Island secondary schools championships in March. This year St Bede’s entered a relatively inexperienced team of 14 boys, which contained only 7 players from the 2009 squad that won the Canterbury Super Touch competition and competed at the nationals in December.
Although the team lacked experience having only been training together for two weeks before the tournament, there was no lack of skill or attitude. Below are the results:
- St. Bede’s vs CBHS Win 6 – 4
- St. Bede’s vs STAC Win 7 – 2
- St. Bede’s vs SHIR Win 5 – 2
- St. Bede’s vs BUR Win 10 – 2
- St. Bede’s vs PAP Draw 5-5
At the end of the day’s play the team was placed 1st equal with Papanui High School on total points but were then placed second as Papanui had a superior for and against record.
Well done to the team, this was a great result, and we look forward to the South Island secondary tournament in March.
